Practise! Practise!

The need and desire to practise is ever-present!

I’m currently grappling with the music of one of my piano heroes, Fats Waller, and also developing three- and four-part improvised counterpoint on the organ.

Welcome!

RM-workshop02.jpg

Welcome to my website - it's taken some time, but after 35 years as a full-time teacher I am now working as a profesional musician and thoroughly enjoying new challenges.

And what do I do? Apart from confusing congregations with the odd flight of fancy in well known hymn tunes, I would lay claim to being one of the most experienced teachers and practioners of the art of improvisation living in Kirkcaldy (OK I can expand that bit!)

If you want to learn more about improvising in any style, or book me for a workshop, lesson, concert or commission new work, then please read on...

Quotes

From Tim Garland:

Richard with Tim Garland, S. Shields

"Richard's enthusiasm is infectious! I can think of no-one better to demystify the joys of jazz music to students and young listeners."

From Tommy Smith:

"Over the last 30 years there have been many jazz musicians hailing from the Kingdom of Fife; this invaluable exodus is due to the prodigious work and energy of one individual, Richard Michael. His educational dedication in the field of jazz over numerous decades has fueled the potential careers of countless young musicians.

I salute you."

From Guy Barker:

" I first worked with Richard some years ago on an educational project at the Wigmore hall along with around 200 school children. It was great to see someone who knew exactly how to get their message across with enthusiasm, humour, immediacy and of course fantastic musicianship."

From teachers at a recent INSET day in Hants:

  • "Brilliant. Every course should have this."
  • "Great that he covered beginners as well."
  • "Very, very inspiring and useful. Not enough time!"
  • "Excellent, stimulating ideas."
  • "Inspirational and so practical. Just what I needed!"
  • "What a musician! Inspiring."

From

Peter Erskine

"Richard Michael presented one of the best jazz classes I have ever had the pleasure to witness: informative, fun and, most importantly, inspiring for all involved. I wish that jazz had more educators and advocates like Richard Michael!"
